THE FACULTY OF JOURNALISM’S ENGLISH CLUB
The Faculty of Journalism’s English Club was launched in October 2007 by the Department of English for Journalists. Throughout the 2007-8 academic year, the Club has been meeting every Monday from 5 pm till 8 pm. in room 603 of the Faculty of Journalism (26, 1st Line V.O., St Petersburg 199004, Russia.)
In addition to film screenings in English, journalism students and guest speakers from the USA, Canada, Austria, Hong Kong, China, Finland, UK, the Netherlands and Russia have made presentations on some interesting topics including How to Play Bad Football and Still Go to Euro 2008 – Facts & Fun about Austria; Hockey: Canada’s game?; Documentary Photography in the Netherlands; What’s happening on TV?; Low Cost Traveling; The New Yorker Magazine; Cartoons: What Do They Mean?; Love and Dating: How to Meet Your Person; Cooking: Man in the Kitchen; Stereotypes: What Do We Think of Americans and What Do They Think about Us?; There Are No Kangaroos in Austria!; Traveling for and against, Studying English in St.-Petersburg and abroad; Global Warming; etc.
The Club ran a short story writing contest in English on the following topics: Easy life; Being First Does Not Mean to Be a Winner; Black Holes: Are They Real?; How to Start a Conversation with a Stranger; Tomorrow Will Always Be Better than Today. Winners, who were selected by a panel of judges and through online voting, were awarded prizes at the final session of the Club on 19 May 2008.
At this final session Faculty of Journalism students presented five theatre productions in English.
Another project of the Club is publishing the online English-language newspaper the C@mpus at http://eng.jf.pu.ru/newspaper/
The Club will continue the tradition of guest lectures and student theatre productions.
To be part of the Faculty of Journalism English Club you don’t need to be a student or staff member of the Faculty of Journalism, you can just come and join the fun! All sessions are free!
