School of Journalism and Mass Communications welcomes freshmen

Initiation ceremony of St. Petersburg State University students was held on the Square of Academician Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov

A ceremony was held for thousands of newcomers of St. Petersburg State University to welcome them, and to congratulate with the beginning of study, that started on the 1st of September, and known as official Russian holiday – Day of Knowledge.

Chatting with each other and smiling, many freshmen came to the gathering area. They were eager to know each other and looking forward to the new life.

The ceremony began at 11 a.m., several officials attended the ceremony as below: Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko, Vice-governor of St. Petersburg Igor Divinsky, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg Vyacheslav Makarov, First deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Construction Alexei Alexandrov, Chairman of the Committee on Science and High School Andrei Maximov, Rector of St. Petersburg State University Nikolai Kropachev, President of the St. Petersburg State University Lyudmila Verbitskaya, dignitaries, and famous St. Petersburg State University graduates.

Rector Nikolai Kropachev uttered a solemn speech with a brief introduction of the University’s history and its importance for Russian educational system. He warmly welcomed all freshmen and wished them good luck in the future.

According to tradition, students of St. Petersburg State University sweared the Oath. The ceremony ended with the rise of the flag of St. Petersburg State University.

After the ceremony a newcomer of School of Journalism and Mass Communications said: “I am happy to be here today. I like the ceremony very much. It is really well-organized and I’m longing for knowledge, and broadening my horizon in the future days as a student of St. Petersburg State University”.
