Democracy 2.0.

May 10, 2014

UntitledOn April 28–May 3 students of SpU took part in the media workshop “Democracy 2.0” in Berlin. It united 12 young journalists from Russia and Germany (6 from each country). The workshop was organized by School of Journalism and Mass Communications of St. Petersburg University and Youth Press Germany with the support of foundation “Petersburger Dialog”.

The program of the To4ka-workshop consisted of various excursions, meetings with experts, collecting information and writing the article. The students got a chance to visit the Reichstag building, the building of the state parliament (Abgeordnetenhaus) of Berlin and the Berliner studio of Germany’s international broadcaster DW (Deutsche Welle). Besides the participants could talk with the leader of the protest art project RLF Friedrich von Borries, the parliamentary party member of the Pirate Party in the state parliament of Berlin Christopher Lauer and the press secretary of the State Criminal Police Office of Berlin Stefan Redlich.

Friedrich von Borries introduced his specific project and explained the meaning of the RLF activities: “We protest against capitalism with its own weapon,” he said.

Christopher Lauer from the Pirate Party which is famous for its love to the Internet surprised students with his skepticism after two years of doing the real politics in the state parliament of Berlin: “Internet-democracy is nice. But it should work even when the electricity goes off.”

At the end every student should write a text about one aspect of the main topic – “Democracy 2.0”. Meeting with experts as well as an opportunity of visiting May 1 Demonstration in Berlin gave them much useful information for their articles. Two editors – Jessica Schober and Anna Litvinenko – were always ready to give an advice to the young journalists.

“SJMC Saint Petersburg works together with the “Youth press Germany” since four years already, and our seminars are really popular among the students, as far as their give a unique opportunity to gain journalistic experience in a truly international environment”, Anna Litvinenko said.

Articles prepared by joint efforts of Petersburg students and their German counterparts on the topic “Democracy 2.0.” are published at the Russian-Germany exchange web-portal Tochka-Treff
