Teaching of advertising disciplines at the St Petersburg State University faculty of journalism has been carried out by professors and associate professors of public relations and advertising since 1996. In September 2008 the rector created the chair of advertising, which has become part of the faculty of applied communications. In 2009 the first certified specialists in advertising graduated.

Now the chair, together with other chairs of the faculty of applied communications, carries out the preparation of bachelors of advertising and public relations, and also masters in the advertising and strategic communications profiles. Short-term educational programs, including in professional development of staff of advertising agencies and departments of business firms are realized. At chair there is postgraduate study.

As a part of the chair there are 2 doctors and 4 candidates of science.

"Conceptual bases of an advertology" is the main scientific direction developed on chair.
